Aberdeen Performing Arts presents new work by artist Gill Russell in response to A Narrow Glimpse of Sea by writer Esther Woolfson.

The collaboration between Gill and Esther is an exploration of Aberdeen’s relationship with the North Sea and the natural landscape of the City of Aberdeen. Extending beyond topographical boundaries, both artist and writer use the natural landscapes of the area to connect to wider, universal issues facing individuals, society and the planet at a moment of maximal awareness of the evanesce of life on Earth.

The themes are expressed through an installation of digital prints, vinyl wall drawings, oral history recordings, texts, maps and extracts from Esther’s writing.

Gill Russell is an artist interested in places of ‘significance’ and how they resonate in a wider context. Recently her work has focused on water and its dynamics with the land. She works across a range of forms and media, including installation, audio, mapping, drawing, poems and texts. Walking is often key to her exploration.

Esther Woolfson’s writing concentrates on every aspect of the human relationship with other species.  Her most recent work examines and challenges human attitudes towards the natural world through an exploration of their long historic and philosophical roots.  She has a particular interest in urban wildlife.

The exhibition is part of ‘Boundaries; a City of Sky and Sea’ and is the first of Aberdeen Performing Arts exciting new programme of visual arts commissions featuring a range of art forms to be profiled across our venues.
