Light the Blue 2026: Young Technicians Call-Out
Aberdeen Performing Arts is offering young people aged 16-18 with an interest in backstage roles the opportunity to develop new technical skills as part of this year’s Light the Blue.
Light the Blue is our festival for and by young people which takes place every June across Aberdeen. Find out more about the festival here: Light the Blue.
We’re looking for a group of young people to work with our technical team during the festival in June, gaining insight and developing practical skills in areas such as lighting, sound and stage management.
What are we offering?
There are two different opportunities on offer as part of this year’s Young Technicians project:
1. Shadow our lighting, sound and stage management team on 20 tiny plays about…
Over 4 nights, you’ll learn from our professional team and take an active role in helping bring our youth theatre production to life at the Lemon Tree. Shadowing our lighting, sound and stage management team you’ll see how the show develops from technical rehearsal to dress rehearsal and live performance.
This is for you if you have an interest in lighting, sound or stage management and would like to pick up new skills in a theatre space.
Dates (all at the Lemon Tree, 5 West North Street, Aberdeen):
- Wednesday 10th June, 5 – 9pm
- Thursday 11th June, 6 – 9pm
- Friday 12th June, 6 – 9pm
- Saturday 13th June, 6 – 9pm
2. Be part of the Takeover crew, specialising in sound and stage management
Working alongside our professional production team, you’ll help us deliver an afternoon of pop-up performances featuring over 100 young people from across Scotland in multiple pop-up spaces across the city.
This is for you if you have an interest in sound or stage management and would like to develop experience delivering a fast-paced, multi-location event.
Date (across Aberdeen city):
- Saturday 13th June, 11.30am – 5.30pm
How do you apply?
If you’re interested in being one of our Young Technicians for Light the Blue 2026, please complete our short online form by Monday 25th May at 10pm via the following ONLINE FORM.
To maximise the experience for participants, both opportunities will be limited to a small group. We will prioritise applicants who demonstrate a genuine interest in the project and who we feel would benefit the most from the opportunity.
You can apply for one or both options and must be available for all dates for the relevant opportunity you’re applying for.
There is no cost for participation in this project. We are also able to offer a small number of travel bursaries to those who would otherwise be unable to attend sessions, to be discussed with successful participants.
If you require any additional support in submitting a proposal, such as receiving the information in an alternative format, or you have any questions please contact us via lightthebluefestival@aberdeenperformingarts.com.
Deadline: Monday 25th May at 10pm.
