For 120 years, His Majesty’s Theatre has set the stage for Aberdeen’s cultural offering. A place where stories are shared, memories are made and creativity is celebrated.

From its first curtain rise for Sweet Red Riding Hood back in 1906, to the standing ovations of today’s modern musicals, challenging dramas and reimagined classics, this iconic venue has remained a cornerstone of the city’s artistic life. A stage loved by generations who have laughed, cried and applauded together, sharing in the indescribable joy of being immersed in live theatre.

Across 12 decades, His Majesty’s Theatre has welcomed world-class performers, local talent and audiences from across Aberdeen, Scotland and beyond, each playing their part on a stage that continues to shine at the heart of the city’s cultural life.

This special anniversary year, we’re putting His Majesty’s Theatre firmly in the spotlight and celebrating its past, championing its present and looking ahead to a bold and creative future. It’s a celebration not just of the theatre itself, but of everything it continues to bring to audiences and creatives across the North-east.

When was His Majesty’s Theatre originally opened? 

HMT opened to the public on the 3 December 1906.

What special events are planned for the anniversary year? 

We’ll be running a whole series of events throughout the year, and we’d love you to be involved. Keep an eye on this webpage for more information as it comes, and also on our socials.

How can I purchase tickets for anniversary events? 

You can purchase tickets in the same way you would for any other performances in our venues – visit the What’s On section or visit this page.

What is the history of His Majesty’s Theatre? 

In 1901, the plans were submitted for inspection, the cost being estimated upwards of £20,000.  There is a story that the Den Burn’s position, which runs directly under the theatre, was altered on the plans to ensure their acceptance.

Construction did not begin until 1904, because of a difficulty in finding sufficient granite.  The front of HMT used Kemnay granite, with granite from Tillyfoury being used for the back.

The theatre was built totally by Aberdeen workmen; only the fittings and furnishings came from elsewhere.

Has the theatre undergone any major renovations or restorations? 

Yes, in 1933, 1982 and 2004 – to meet the changing entertainment landscape of cinema, then health and safety regulations and latterly to comply with the disability act, which also gave the opportunity to add the extension of the glass foyer and restaurant.
