First look at new bar & café, The Terrace at His Majesty’s Theatre
Aberdeen’s His Majesty’s Theatre is raising the curtain on a new bar and cafe following a £675,000 refurbishment.
The Terrace, overlooking Union Terrace Gardens, is the perfect spot to enjoy pre-show dining, light lunches before a matinee or celebratory meals with an evening show. The Terrace will have a focus on fresh ingredients offering a simple but tasty menu and seasonal specials. Diners might also be treated to themed references celebrating the magic of the shows appearing at His Majesty’s throughout the year, with special deals for families and children.
Open all day with mid-morning coffee, brunch and light bites into the evening, The Terrace will offer pre-booking online or when booking tickets by phone.
Funding for The Terrace redevelopment was made available through Scottish Enterprise and Aberdeen City Council as part of the recovery and rebuilding stimulus after the pandemic, to increase circulation space and improve customer experience. The mezzanine floor of the bar and café has been extended out to the glass frontage of the theatre allowing for more space and a perfect view of Union Terrace Gardens in a re-imagined and re-invigorated dining area.
Aberdeen Performing Arts Chairman, Craig Pike, said: “We’ve all been through some tough times in recent years, so we’re even more determined to ensure our audiences have a great night out when visiting the theatre. Relaxing at The Terrace is the perfect start to an unforgettable performance as guests can move from dining into the auditorium with ease – and can pop back at the interval for drinks.
“We’ve worked so hard to get this up and running through the summer and autumn. It’s a welcoming spot with great views and a wide-ranging drinks list plus some exciting dishes. I’d encourage everyone to book a table at The Terrace.”
Scottish Enterprise’s Regional Champion for the North East Rhona Allison said: “His Majesty’s Theatre is an iconic building and this refurbishment will perfectly complement the development outlined in the Aberdeen City Council City Centre Masterplan.
“Aberdeen Performing Arts is a key pillar of the city’s creative community and we have been proud to support them in this redevelopment of the theatre, which will increase their contribution to the growth of this crucial sector.
“Scottish Enterprise’s investment in The Terrace, in partnership with Aberdeen Performing Arts and Aberdeen City Council, enhances His Majesty’s Theatre’s role in positioning Aberdeen and the North-east as a vibrant cultural tourism destination.
Councillor Martin Greig, Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services Convener, said: “The Terrace is an attractive addition to His Majesty’s Theatre and the city centre. Spaces like these will really help to keep the area vibrant and attractive and we are delighted to have supported this new development.”
