Aberdeen City Orchestra: West Side Story Symphonic Dances
Building on successful performances at the Music Hall featuring Music from the Movies and Holst’s The Planets, Aberdeen City Orchestra returns with a programme from across the Atlantic.
The centrepiece will be Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, a collection of movements with drive and swagger. This will be preceded by a medley of works by composers from Latin America. Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 opens with the dance rhythms that have made it one of Mexico’s best-loved orchestral works. ACO will then perform conductor Pete Stollery’s bespoke orchestration of Piazzolla’s Milonga for Three, followed by Sonia Possetti’s Bullanguera, both drawn from the world of Argentine tango. The final work before West Side Story will be Bachianas Brasileiras No. 9 for Strings in which Villa-Lobos encapsulates the spirit of Bach in rhythms from Brazil.
